Farmer leader Dallewal to begin hunger strike from Nov 26 as protests intensify
Delhi/Ferozepur, November 22: The Samyukt Kisan Morcha - SKM (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha – KMM, made significant announcements during a press conference at the Delhi Press Club today. Earlier, a meeting of farmer leaders from various states, including South India, was held at Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib in Delhi.
The Morcha has been protesting at Shambhu, Khanauri, and Ratanpur borders since February 13, demanding the implementation of promises made by the government. Despite nine months of protests, their demands remain unmet. To intensify the movement, senior farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal will begin an indefinite hunger strike at Khanauri Border from November 26.
Nationwide Solidarity Protests
Farmers and laborers from Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and other states will gather at the Khanauri Border to support the hunger strike. Similarly, peaceful protests will be held at district headquarters across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and other South Indian states.
Condemnation of Police Action
The Morcha strongly condemned the recent police action against farmers protesting the Bharatmala project in Bathinda, Punjab. They called the lathi charge a suppression of farmers' democratic rights.
Future Strategy
The leaders warned that if the government fails to address their demands, farmers will launch a march towards Delhi from Shambhu Border on December 6. The protestors also urged opposition parties to introduce a Private Member’s Bill in Parliament on the Minimum Support Price (MSP) Guarantee Law.
Nationwide Movement for Farmers' Rights
Farmer leaders, including Kuruburu Shanta Kumar (Karnataka), P.R. Pandian (Tamil Nadu), and Sudha Madam, emphasized the need to expand the movement across India. They announced district-level demonstrations in southern states to support the Khanauri hunger strike.
Participating Leaders
The press conference saw participation from prominent leaders like Sarwan Singh Pandher, Sukhjinder Singh Khosa, Tejveer Singh (Haryana), Abhimanyu Kohar, and representatives from Uttar Pradesh, including Rajinder Yadav and Jatinder Sharma.
The Morcha appealed to the central government to fulfill its commitments and called on all stakeholders to ensure that farmers' demands are met in the upcoming parliamentary session starting November 25.
