DSCW organizes workshop on Common Food Adulteration and Detection
Ferozepur, February 15, 2025: The Post Graduate Department of Chemistry and Department of Home Science of the Dev Samaj College for Women (DSCW) successfully organised a workshop on 'Common Food Adulteration And Detection'.
Dr Vandana Gupta, Head of the Department of Home Science, while making the students aware of the subject, said that food is one of the necessities of life, yet it is increasingly being affected by adulteration, causing serious health risks. Food adulteration - the act of compromising food quality by adding chemicals or foreign substances - has become a major concern. Adulteration is often found in daily consumption items like milk and spices, affecting both food quality and public health. This unethical behaviour, driven by monetary gain, not only endangers consumer well-being but also leads to food wastage when contaminated products are discarded.
Neha Gupta, Head of, the Department of Chemistry, informed that the workshop aimed to raise awareness about food safety and equip students with the knowledge and skills required to detect adulteration. Postgraduate students, under the guidance of faculty members, conducted various experiments to identify adulterants in food samples. Through practical demonstrations, the participants learnt about the definition and types of food adulterants, common adulterants in foods, associated health risks, basic identification methods and legal consumer protection measures. The session emphasised the importance of strict monitoring, strategic planning and technological advancements in tackling food adulteration. Integration of food safety apps, improved laboratory facilities and trained personnel for supervision will play a vital role in ensuring safe and nutritious food for all.
Dr. Sangeeta, Principal congratulated the staff for the successful organization of the workshop.
