Major Setback for AAP in Delhi: 13 Councillors resign, form new political front

New Delhi – May 17, 2025:In a significant political development, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has suffered a major blow in Delhi as 13 of its municipal councillors have resigned and announced the formation of a new political outfit, the Indraprastha Vikas Party.
The rebel leaders, dissatisfied with the functioning of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), have formed a separate group within the corporation.
The new party will be led by Hemchand Goel, with Mukesh Goel serving as its president. This development marks the emergence of a "third front" in Delhi’s local politics, challenging both AAP and the BJP in the capital’s civic landscape.
Councillors Who Resigned Include:
- Hemchand Goel
- Dinesh Bhardwaj
- Himani Jain
- Usha Sharma
- Sahib Kumar
- Rakhi Kumar
- Ashok Pandey
- Rajesh Kumar
- Anil Rana
- Devendra Kumar
Why They Resigned:
Speaking to the media, councillor Himani Jain explained the reason behind the mass resignation.
“We have formed a new party, the Indraprastha Vikas Party, and resigned from AAP. In the last two and a half years, the MCD has seen little to no progress despite being in power. We felt we were not able to deliver the change we promised. Our new party is focused solely on Delhi’s development, and we will support any party that works in that direction.”
So far, 15 councillors have reportedly resigned, and more may follow, signalling deeper unrest within AAP’s municipal wing.
