Chandigarh, May 17, 2025: In a significant development, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) held a high-level meeting with senior legal experts and former judges at its Sub Office in Chandigarh to deliberate on the future course of action regarding the petition filed in the case of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana. The meeting, chaired by SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, saw a detailed discussion on legal and strategic aspects of the case.
Despite Bhai Rajoana’s recent request to the SGPC to withdraw the petition, the consensus at the meeting was to not retract the petition and instead continue the legal battle with determination.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Advocate Dhami described the issue as a “serious national matter” that required a unified national voice.
He criticized the government's approach, stating that despite the Supreme Court’s directives, the government's inaction reflects a discriminatory and concerning stance on a matter deeply linked to Sikh sentiments and human rights.
"The SGPC has been committed to fighting this legal battle for justice and equality. The delay and disregard by the government is not just disappointing — it questions their intentions," Dhami said.
He acknowledged Bhai Rajoana's firm stance and anger regarding the petition, noting that while his concerns are valid, any decision must be taken with careful consideration and wider consultation. To this end, the SGPC plans to convene a larger Panthic meeting in the coming days to decide the next course of action.
The gathering included prominent figures such as Justice Maninder Mohan Singh Bedi (Retd.), Senior Advocates Puran Singh Hundal, G.S. Bal, Amar Singh Chahal, Rajwinder Singh Bains, as well as Sikh scholar Dr. Kehar Singh, former IAS officer S. Kahan Singh Pannu, and several SGPC members and senior legal professionals.
The strong message from the meeting is clear: the SGPC will not back down and will continue to seek justice for Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana, ensuring that legal and human rights are not compromised under political pressure.
