In light of the escalating heat, Deputy Commissioner Showkat Ahmed Parrey has issued an advisory to district residents, emphasizing the importance of taking proactive measures to avoid heatstroke.
The Deputy Commissioner highlighted that symptoms of heatstroke include, but are not limited to, darkness before the eyes, dizziness, restlessness, nervousness, mild or high fever, excessive thirst, severe headache, vomiting, feeling weak, and reduced sweating despite the heat. In the event of such symptoms, it is crucial to provide immediate care, including moving the individual to a shaded area, loosening their clothing, administering fluids, applying cold compresses, and, if necessary, immersing the individual in a bathtub filled with cold water.
Additionally, preparing an Oral Rehydration Solution (O.R.S.) and administering it to the patient can help alleviate symptoms.
The Deputy Commissioner stressed that if the individual's fever exceeds 104-105 degrees Fahrenheit, sweating ceases, and the skin becomes dry and rough, or if the individual becomes unconscious or exhibits extreme nervousness, it is imperative to seek immediate medical attention from a specialist at a healthcare institution.
The Deputy Commissioner noted that certain demographics, including children, adults, individuals with obesity, heart patients, physically weak individuals, and those taking medications that affect the body's chemicals or blood vessels, are at an elevated risk of heatstroke
Furthermore, children, the elderly, and pregnant women are particularly susceptible to heatstroke.
To minimize the risk of heatstroke, the Deputy Commissioner recommended wearing light, comfortable cotton clothing and head coverings when venturing outdoors.
Additionally, consuming fluids such as water, lassi, and O.R.S. solution can help maintain hydration levels.
The Deputy Commissioner also advised against leaving home on an empty stomach during periods of intense heat, avoiding excessive consumption of spicy food, and refraining from sudden transitions from air-conditioned or cooled environments to direct sunlight.
The Deputy Commissioner urged district residents to exercise caution and take proactive measures to avoid heatstroke, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing health and safety during this period.
