Six mobiles seized in crackdown on contraband at Central Jail Ferozepur
Ferozepur: In a significant crackdown on illegal activities within prison walls, alert staff at the Central Jail Ferozepur seized six mobile phones during a routine search operation.
Officials recovered five keypad phones and one touchscreen phone, leading to the booking of seven under-trial prisoners under the 52-A Prisons Act. The accused—Surinder Singh, Gurmanpreet Singh, Karandeep Singh (alias Tarun/Badal), Baljinder Singh (alias Lovely), Solav Singh, and Sukhchain Singh—were booked based on a complaint filed by Investigating Officer Gurdip Singh.
Due to rising incidents of contraband recovery, authorities confiscated 269 mobile phones between January and May 2025. In comparison, 510 mobile phones were recovered throughout 2024, alongside various other prohibited items.
So far as challenges in investigation and the need for stricter measures are concerned, sources reveal that remanding all accused prisoners for further investigation remains challenging due to staff shortages and security concerns, except in high-profile cases.
However, there is an urgent need for Stricter implementation of digital communication restrictions
- Advanced surveillance technology deployment, Rigorous visitor screening and restricting visitation rights and denying parole for prisoners found in possession of contraband.
Officials are now considering enhanced security protocols to curb the influx of banned items and ensure safer prison management.
