Canada slams US tariffs on steel and aluminium: Minister Maninder Sidhu vows strategic response
Babushahi Bureau
Ottawa (Canada), June 1, 2025: In a strongly worded statement, Maninder Sidhu, Canada’s Minister of International Trade, denounced the newly imposed 50 percent U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, calling them “completely unjustified.”
Sidhu emphasized the foundational role Canadian steel and aluminum workers have played in supporting North American manufacturing, innovation, and cross-border supply chains.
“These tariffs hurt North American competitiveness, disrupt trade, and put unnecessary strain on workers and businesses,” he said.
The minister reaffirmed Canada's commitment to defending its economic interests, noting that future trade relations with the U.S. will be based on Canadian values and priorities—“strategically, thoughtfully, and without delay.”
Highlighting Canada’s shift toward global trade diversification, Sidhu referenced recent engagements:
- A trade agreement conclusion in Ecuador,
- Over 100 Canadian organizations participating in Southeast Asia trade missions,
- His presence at CANSEC, meeting with Canadian defence firms to elevate their international reach.
-
“Canada has what the world needs and we’re ready to deliver,” Sidhu declared, reaffirming the country's readiness to lead on the world stage amid growing global trade tensions.
