Phagwara (Punjab), June 1, 2025: In a landmark step towards enhancing urban sanitation and public health, the Municipal Corporation Phagwara has initiated Sunday waste collection from secondary garbage points — a first in the city’s history.
Previously, waste from secondary dumpsites remained uncollected on Sundays, often leading to overflows and complaints from residents. With this new measure, sanitation teams will now operate seven days a week, ensuring uninterrupted waste management.
The initiative was officially launched today with a Cleanliness Drive held at the Government School Secondary Point and Hoshiarpur Road Secondary Point.
The event was inaugurated by Mayor Ram Pal Uppal and Commissioner Dr. Akshita Gupta, along with the Health Branch team led by Sanitary Inspector Sewak Ram and Supervisor Jograj.
Sanitation workers were fully mobilized during the launch, swiftly removing accumulated waste for proper scientific disposal.
Mayor Ram Pal Uppal said,
“Until now, Sunday waste collection didn’t happen, leading to unhygienic conditions. This changes today. I congratulate the health team for this sustained effort to make Phagwara cleaner.”
Commissioner Dr. Akshita Gupta emphasized that the initiative is not a one-time event:
“Secondary dumps will now be cleared every Sunday. We’re committed to this as a regular, city-wide practice. I urge citizens to support us by segregating waste and maintaining cleanliness in their neighborhoods.”
The Municipal Corporation has assured that dedicated teams and a scheduled plan will ensure weekly pickups from priority areas, helping reduce health risks and improve city aesthetics.
