Clash among Takth Jathedars a grave threat to Sikh unity: Former Punjab Speaker

Chandigarh, July 6, 2025 – Senior Akali Dal leader and former Speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, Ravinder Singh, has raised serious concerns over the current state of affairs within the Sikh community, warning that internal rifts, particularly among the Jathedars of the Takhts, are endangering the unity and spiritual foundation of the Panth.
In a strongly worded press statement, Singh emphasized the urgent need to preserve the ideology of Baba Kharak Singh and Master Tara Singh, which, he said, once gave the Sikh community a powerful political and moral compass.
He asserted that restoring the Panth’s leadership must now take the shape of a collective, transparent 'Panchayat'-style structure, in line with the spirit of the Gurus.
“By elevating individual figures who have harmed the Panth, the dignity of the Jathedars has been reduced to a joke,” Singh said.
“This disillusionment within the community is deeply troubling, and the ongoing clash between Takht Jathedars could prove disastrous for the future of Sikh leadership.”
Singh held the Badal family responsible for much of the current unrest and urged the Sikh Panth to turn its focus to Akal Takht Sahib, the highest temporal seat of Sikh authority.
He further stated that the community is in dire need of a strong, stable, and honest leadership that can counter political manipulation and resist the influence of anti-Sikh forces, which he said are exploiting the current turmoil.
“Only leadership grounded in sacrifice and integrity can address the pressing issues facing Punjab and the Sikh Panth today,” Singh asserted. He also accused certain opportunistic and self-serving leaders of using the situation to advance their personal agendas at the cost of Punjab’s collective interest.
Concluding his statement, Ravinder Singh cautioned that if Sikh leadership continues to stray from Panthic values, it will never regain its former strength and glory.
