Uttarkashi (Uttarakhand), August 5, 2025: A devastating cloudburst struck Dharli village in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, in the early hours of Tuesday, causing widespread destruction and leaving 50 to 60 people feared missing.
The incident has impacted the entire Dharli Bazaar area, a crucial halt on the route to Gangotri Dham.
According to initial reports, the cloudburst occurred over Dharli village, leading to sudden and heavy flooding from the Kheer Ganga river. The flash floods swept away multiple houses located along the riverbank, with visuals likened to matchsticks being washed away.
Several hotels and homestays in the region have also been damaged. Authorities fear that many labourers and residents may still be trapped under debris.
The Uttarakhand government has launched a large-scale rescue and relief operation. Teams from the Indian Army, Police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed to Bhatwari and the surrounding disaster-hit areas.
Union Minister Ajay Tamta confirmed the disaster and attributed the damage to the cloudburst. He said all necessary central assistance will be provided.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stated that rescue operations are ongoing on a war footing and every effort is being made to locate the missing and provide relief to the affected.
Further updates are awaited as rescue efforts continue under challenging weather conditions.
