Delhi reorganised into 13 districts: What it means for citizens
Babushahi Bureau
New Delhi, December 28, 2025: In a major administrative overhaul, the Delhi government has increased the number of districts in the national capital from 11 to 13, aiming to reduce administrative pressure and improve the efficiency and speed of government services.
The Delhi government cited the city’s rapidly growing population as the reason behind the restructuring. The existing 11 districts were reportedly insufficient to manage the expanding urban areas effectively.
By creating new districts, the administration aims to make governance faster, more uniform, and impactful.

One immediate concern for citizens is determining which Sub-Registrar Office (SRO) to approach for property registration and land documents under the new district boundaries.
To avoid inconvenience, the Delhi government has issued an interim SRO mapping. This temporary arrangement allows citizens to continue registering properties at the same SROs they used previously until the new system is fully implemented.
The current system is temporary. In the long term, the government plans to make administration more citizen-friendly. The Cabinet has approved increasing the number of SROs in Delhi from 22 to 39, ensuring reduced crowding and faster processing in each district.Advice for Citizens
The government has assured residents that there is no need to panic. Citizens are advised to continue using their existing SROs under the interim mapping. Detailed information about the new system will be released once it is fully operational.
