Raj Babbar hails Supreme Court on Aravalli ruling, seeks scrutiny of existing mining leases

New Delhi, December 29, 2025: Senior Congress leader and former Member of Parliament Raj Babbar has welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to put a stay on its own order related to the Aravalli range, calling it a “positive and reassuring step” for environmental protection.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Raj Babbar said that the height-based (100-metre) definition of the Aravallis was designed to prioritise economic interests over ecology—an issue that, he noted, is now widely understood. However, he also pointed out that shortcomings exist in the government’s own orders, which have contributed to the controversy.
Babbar questioned the government’s assurances on mining restrictions, stating that while the Union Minister has claimed that no new mining leases will be granted, the decision does not affect existing leaseholders. He warned that companies already holding mining leases could resume operations once conditions become favourable, thereby continuing environmental damage.
Expressing hope in judicial oversight, the Congress leader said he expects the Hon’ble Supreme Court to take full cognisance of this concern while examining the matter further.
