Auckland, ( NZ ) January 11, 2026:
In New Zealand, local Māori groups once again attempted to disrupt a Nagar Kirtan being organised by members of the Sikh community in Tauranga.
The Nagar Kirtan commenced after the Bhog of an Akhand Path at Gurdwara Sikh Sangat, Tauranga, and was held between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. Following religious ceremonies at the gurdwara, the procession moved towards Tauranga Boys’ College via Cameron Road.
Anticipating possible disturbances, the local police had put in place elaborate security arrangements. In addition, the Sikh community deployed an increased number of volunteers to ensure the peaceful conduct of the religious procession.
Despite these measures, a group of local Māori individuals attempted to disrupt the Nagar Kirtan by performing a Haka dance along the procession route. However, due to effective coordination between the police and Sikh volunteers, the event concluded without any major untoward incident.
