MGNREGA Bachao Sangram Rally at Guruharsahai draws record crowd
Huge Turnout at Guruharsahai MGNREGA Rally shows Congress regaining momentum in Punjab
Guruharsahai(Ferozepur), January 12, 2026: A massive turnout at the MGNREGA Bachao Sangram Rally, held under the chairmanship of former MLA Raminder Awla at Guruharsahai, created political history and sent a strong message across Punjab about the Congress party’s renewed momentum. Party leaders termed the rally the most successful MGNREGA-related mobilisation in the state so far.

Senior Congress leaders, including former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa, Punjab Congress in-charge Bhupesh Baghel, PCC president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, and Rana Gurjeet Singh, addressed the gathering and said the huge public participation reflected the party’s firm resolve to form the government in Punjab in the 2027 Assembly elections.
Addressing the rally, the leaders launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led Union government, accusing it of pursuing anti-labour policies and attempting to weaken MGNREGA. They asserted that under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress would wage a decisive struggle to protect and restore MGNREGA in its original form. They also announced that after the completion of these rallies, BJP leaders’ residences would be gheraoed across Punjab as part of the agitation.
PCC president Raja Warring said the Awla family had consistently stood by the people of the border district and fulfilled public demands, which was reflected in the immense public support witnessed at the rally. He also targeted BJP’s state president Sunil Jakhar, calling him a “turncoat” and urging people to remain cautious of such leaders.
Thanking the people for their overwhelming support, former MLA Raminder Awla said that Ferozepur, being a border and backward district, depended heavily on welfare schemes like MGNREGA. He assured that when Congress forms the government, non-cultivable and disputed lands in border areas would be regularised and ownership rights granted to the poor, ensuring economic security. Awla added that while MGNREGA sustains the livelihoods of ordinary and poor families, the Modi government was trying to undermine it, a move the Congress would strongly resist.
