Jalandhar (Punjab), February 1, 2026:Union Minister of State for Railways and Food Processing Industries, Shri Ravneet Singh Bittu, on Sunday said that the cargo terminal at Halwara Airport should be made operational simultaneously with passenger flights, citing the region’s strong and growing demand for air cargo services.

Addressing the gathering during the virtual inaugural ceremony of Halwara Airport, Bittu urged the Union Minister for Civil Aviation to ensure the early commencement of cargo operations. He said the airport is expected to handle far greater passenger and cargo traffic than initially projected due to Ludhiana’s robust industrial base.
“At present, industrialists from this region are forced to rely on Amritsar and Chandigarh airports for cargo movement. Halwara Airport will serve the entire industrial belt and substantially reduce logistics costs,” the Union Minister said.
Bittu also proposed that the airport be named after Shaheed-e-Azam Sardar Kartar Singh Sarabha, honouring the iconic freedom fighter and revolutionary.
Thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for inaugurating the airport, Bittu termed the project a historic gift to Punjab, stating that it will significantly boost industry, trade and employment across the region.
