Chandigarh, February 12, 2026: On the India-US trade deal, prominent industrialist and Rajya Sabha MP Rajinder Gupta, in a conversation with Baljit Balli, Editor Babushahi, said that India must be prepared to expand both its economic capacity and institutional framework while engaging with global powers.
Speaking on trade interests and the changing political climate, Gupta remarked, “Je oothan valeyan naal yaari launi hai, taan darwaze vadde rakhne painge,” explaining that partnerships with large economies like the United States require openness, preparedness and structural readiness. He clarified that when two nations enter into a trade treaty, each safeguards its own interests, and India must approach such agreements with strategic clarity.
Gupta noted that tariffs which had previously touched nearly 50 percent have reportedly come down to around 18 percent, describing it as a significant relief for industry. He said increased competition could benefit consumers by offering better quality products at competitive prices.

Discussing the likely impact on Punjab, Gupta observed that while coastal states with port infrastructure may experience more direct advantages, the ripple effect of expanded trade and industrial activity would also reach Punjab through supply chains and ancillary sectors.
Reflecting on the broader political environment, Gupta drew a contrast between earlier decades and the present, noting that political interactions have become more formal and cautious. He said public scrutiny and digital culture have changed the tone of leadership engagement.
He emphasised that if India aims to emerge among the world’s top three economies, it must adopt the pathways taken by developed nations. Highlighting America’s leadership in energy and technology, Gupta said strategic cooperation can create long-term economic opportunities for India.
