Nearly 63,000 water conservation works executed in Punjab in 5 yrs: Union Minister in reply to MP Satnam Sandhu

New Delhi, February 12, 2026: Nearly 63,000 water conservation works have been carried out in Punjab over the past five years under the Centre’s Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain (JSA-CTR) campaign, Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti Raj Bhushan Choudhary informed Parliament.
Responding to a question raised in the Rajya Sabha by MP Satnam Singh Sandhu regarding water conservation measures, storage structures and financial assistance to Punjab, the Minister said a total of 62,996 water-related works have been completed in the state since the launch of the Jal Shakti Abhiyan in 2019.
He stated that under the “Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari” (JSJB) initiative, launched on September 6, 2024, to intensify community participation in building low-cost rainwater harvesting structures, 10,655 artificial recharge and storage structures have been completed in Punjab as of January 27, 2026.
Providing further details, the Minister informed that during the past five years in Punjab:
- 7,362 water conservation and rainwater harvesting works were undertaken.
- 32,006 watershed development works were completed.
- 19,477 traditional water bodies were renovated.
- 4,151 reuse and recharge-related structures were developed.
The Minister said the campaign follows a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach to ensure conservation of every drop of water.
MP Satnam Singh Sandhu had sought detailed information on the steps taken to strengthen water conservation infrastructure in Punjab and the extent of central support provided for the same.
