Gurdaspur (Punjab), February 26, 2026: The Punjab Human Rights Organization (PHRO), led by Justice Ranjit Singh, has demanded a high-level judicial inquiry into the alleged police encounter in Gurdaspur district that resulted in the death of a youth, Ranjit Singh.
Expressing deep concern, the organization termed the incident a serious violation of human rights and questioned the authenticity of the police’s version of events.
PHRO representatives stated that the circumstances surrounding the encounter raise significant doubts and must be independently examined to determine whether it was a genuine exchange of fire or a staged killing.
The organization emphasized that internal police investigations often fail to inspire public confidence and may appear biased.
To ensure transparency, fairness, and restoration of public trust, PHRO has urged the Punjab Government to constitute an independent judicial commission headed by a retired judge.
Stressing that no law enforcement agency has the authority to act as judge and executioner in a democracy, the organization reiterated that every citizen is entitled to a fair trial and due process under the law.
