Chandigarh, March 9, 2026: Tension prevailed at Panjab University on Monday after several student organisations staged protests against a programme allegedly linked to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on the campus.
The protest began when student groups gathered to oppose the event and raised slogans against the programme, alleging that it was politically motivated. As the demonstration intensified, the situation turned confrontational, creating unrest on the university premises.
Multiple teams of the Chandigarh Police were deployed to the campus to control the situation. Police personnel attempted to disperse the protesters, which led to clashes between students and the police. Several students were later detained during the operation.
Student organisations criticised the university administration, accusing it of allowing political activities on campus. They argued that educational institutions should remain free from political influence and should not be used for the promotion of any ideological or political group.
The protesting groups maintained that the event linked to the RSS was intended for political promotion and expressed concern over the growing presence of political activities within academic spaces.
Authorities are monitoring the situation, and further action may follow depending on the developments.
