Punjab Assembly passes unanimous resolution seeking Bharat Ratna for Babu Kanshi Ram

Chandigarh, March 16, 2026: The Punjab Legislative Assembly on Monday unanimously passed a resolution urging the Government of India to confer the Bharat Ratna posthumously on noted social reformer and political leader Kanshi Ram.
The resolution was moved by Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, a day after the nation marked the leader’s 92nd birth anniversary. It received support from all members of the House, and the Punjab government will forward the recommendation to the Centre for consideration.
While presenting the resolution, Cheema paid tribute to Kanshi Ram and said he played a pivotal role in promoting the ideology of B. R. Ambedkar and spreading the message of social and economic equality across the country. He described Kanshi Ram as a leader of exceptional integrity who devoted his life to the upliftment of marginalised communities.
The minister noted that Kanshi Ram had left his career as a gazetted officer in Pune to fight caste-based discrimination and mobilise backward and minority communities. He founded the All India Backward and Minority Communities Employees Federation (BAMCEF) before entering active politics, inspiring thousands of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds to participate in the political process.
