Bathinda (Punjab), March 18, 2026: In a major breakthrough, Punjab Police’s Counter Intelligence unit has foiled a possible terror attack with the arrest of two accused and recovery of two hand grenades, officials said on Tuesday.
According to Gaurav Yadav, the operation was carried out as part of an ongoing drive to ensure law and order in the state under the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Buta Singh alias Gurpreet Singh alias Gopu, a resident of Gillwali in Ferozepur, and Harmander Singh alias Nikka, a resident of Mothanwali in Moga.
The DGP said preliminary investigations suggest that the recovered grenades were part of an illegal cross-border supply chain, allegedly intended to disturb peace in the border state. Further probe is underway to trace backward and forward linkages and identify other members of the suspected module.
Sharing operational details, Avneet Kaur Sidhu, Assistant Inspector General, Counter Intelligence Bathinda, said that the police had received specific intelligence inputs about two operatives in possession of explosives. Acting swiftly, police teams intercepted and arrested the suspects on the Moga–Ferozepur road and recovered the grenades.
Officials said the timely action by the Counter Intelligence unit prevented a potential untoward incident.
A case has been registered under Sections 3, 4, and 5 of the Explosives Act at the State Special Operation Cell police station in Fazilka (FIR No. 06 dated March 17, 2026). Investigations are ongoing.
