Howrah (West Bengal), March 27, 2026:The Election Commission of India has intensified its voter awareness campaign across poll-bound states, with a major outreach event held in Howrah under the theme “Chunav Ka Parv, Paschim Bengal Ka Garv.”
The initiative is part of the Systematic Voter Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme ahead of the 2026 Legislative Assembly elections.

Conducted in coordination with the offices of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) and District Election Officers (DEOs), the campaign aims to promote informed and enthusiastic participation in the democratic process across West Bengal, as well as in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry and Tamil Nadu.
In Howrah, the event began with a Cyclothon flagged off from the Howrah Bridge Check Post early in the morning, witnessing participation from students, first-time voters, youth, and officials.

The rally passed key landmarks before concluding at Ramkrishnapur Ferry Ghat, followed by cultural performances including folk songs, dance, and street plays to highlight the importance of voting.
Adding a unique appeal, popular animated characters Chhota Bheem and Chutki joined the event to connect with young and first-time voters and spread awareness in an engaging manner.
The SVEEP campaign also includes innovative initiatives such as voter awareness boat ferries and social media outreach, with a special focus on urban voters, women, persons with disabilities, and youth. Electoral Literacy Clubs in colleges and universities are being mobilised to further strengthen awareness among students.

Officials said the campaign will incorporate West Bengal’s rich cultural heritage—such as Kalighat paintings, Pattachitra art, Chhau dance, Jatra theatre, and Baul traditions—to make the message more relatable and impactful.
The awareness drive also highlights recent voter-friendly measures introduced by the Commission, including mobile deposit facilities outside polling stations, the ECINET app, 100% webcasting, and improved voter information slips.

The ECI said the initiative aims to ensure fear-free, informed, and inclusive participation, reinforcing the spirit of democracy as the state heads towards crucial Assembly elections.
