Chandigarh, May 3, 2026: The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has suspended an Army officer who was serving on deputation with the agency in connection with the alleged custodial death of Border Security Force (BSF) constable Jaswinder Singh in Jammu and Kashmir.
Senior officials confirmed that Major Amit Kumar has been placed under suspension and simultaneously transferred from his post following the incident, which is now under judicial and departmental scrutiny.
The case pertains to the death of Jaswinder Singh, who was arrested by the NCB on March 3 in a drug-related investigation while he was returning home to Diwangarh village near the International Border after accompanying his mother for medical needs. At the time of arrest, he was posted in Tripura and was on leave.
Singh died on March 20 while in custody during transit from Jammu towards Tarn Taran. While NCB officials had earlier attributed his death to a suspected cardiac complication, the post-mortem examination has reportedly revealed 34 injuries on his body, including injuries on sensitive parts, all described as ante-mortem.
The family of the deceased has consistently alleged custodial torture and foul play, demanding a criminal FIR against NCB personnel and a transparent investigation. They have also approached the District and Sessions Court, seeking expedited inquest proceedings.
Medical findings are still awaited, including reports from the chemical examiner at Kharar and histopathology analysis from Government Medical College, Amritsar, which are expected to clarify the exact cause of death.
The family members have also approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court for seeking probe from an independent agency in the case.
