Chandigarh, May 3, 2026: A delegation of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from Punjab, led by state president Sunil Jakhar, on Friday met Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria and submitted a memorandum seeking the removal of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
The BJP delegation raised concerns over what it termed as “constitutional impropriety” and alleged that CM Bhagwant Mann appeared in an inebriated condition during a recent session of the Punjab Legislative Assembly. The party claimed such conduct is incompatible with the responsibilities of leading a sensitive border state.
Sunil Jakhar, while addressing the issue, said that if an intoxicated person cannot legally drive a vehicle, then it is unacceptable for such a person to govern a state. He urged that CM Mann has lost the moral authority to continue in office and should be replaced.
The memorandum submitted to the Governor stated that CM Bhagwant Mann’s conduct inside the Assembly and during media interaction outside the House had raised serious concerns and warranted an official explanation. It further urged the Governor to consider appropriate constitutional action in the interest of public trust and institutional integrity.
The BJP delegation also alleged irregularities in governance, including claims of political misuse of administrative decisions, security arrangements, and alleged protection of individuals facing corruption allegations. It also questioned recent decisions related to withdrawal and allocation of security cover for certain MPs.
On other issues, Jakhar criticised the state government’s proposed drug census, calling it “wasteful and damaging to Punjab’s image,” and argued that the focus should instead be on dismantling drug supply networks.
He also claimed that internal dissatisfaction within the ruling party could lead to a change in leadership, although he acknowledged procedural limitations under the Assembly rules regarding confidence motions.
The delegation included several senior BJP leaders, including Ashwani Sharma, Vijay Sampla, Shwait Malik, Som Prakash, Fateh Jang Bajwa, Manpreet Singh Badal, Preneet Kaur, Parminder Singh Brar, Kewal Singh Dhillon, Tikshan Sood, and Vineet Joshi.
The Governor has not yet issued any official response regarding the memorandum.
