Amritsar (Punjab), May 8, 2026: Sri Akal Takht Sahib has issued a major directive regarding the maryada and sanctity of the sacred saroops of Guru Granth Sahib, stating that no details related to the holy saroops will be uploaded on any website or public digital platform.
Announcing the decision during a special press conference, Akal Takht Jathedar Kuldeep Singh Gargaaj informed Sikh sangat across India and abroad that the directive has been issued to preserve the dignity, respect and Sikh maryada associated with Guru Sahib.
The Akal Takht Jathedar said concerns had arisen over amendments proposed by the Punjab government in the “Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Act,” under which information related to the sacred saroops could allegedly be shared through websites or digital records.
He said Akal Takht Sahib has taken serious note of the matter, asserting that Guru Sahib is not an object whose details can be displayed online like ordinary items.
“Guru Sahib is ‘Jagat Jyot’ and His respect is supreme,” Jathedar Gargaaj said.
Clarifying the Akal Takht’s position, the Jathedar stated, “As per the directive issued by Sri Akal Takht Sahib, no institution, gurdwara management committee or individual will be permitted to publish the number or other details of sacred saroops on websites.”
He added that the decision has been taken to uphold Sikh Rehat Maryada and maintain the highest respect for Guru Sahib.
The Akal Takht Jathedar also directed all Sikh organisations and gurdwara management committees to strictly comply with the directive issued by the highest temporal seat of the Sikh community.
