Youth involvement in crime a cause of concern; police bust snatching gang, 7 arrested with 42 mobiles
Ferozepur; May 8, 2026: As part of a targeted campaign against anti-social elements, the Ferozepur Police has successfully dismantled a major mobile snatching and theft gang. The operation resulted in the arrest of seven individuals and the recovery of 42 stolen mobile phones and two motorcycles.
Addressing the media, SSP Bhupinder Singh Sidhu stated that the crackdown aligns with the Punjab Government’s directives to eliminate criminal activities in the district. The breakthrough occurred on May 4, under the tutelage of DSP Sukhwinder Singh by a team of acting SHO Sukhchain Singh and Ayub Masih.
Following a tip-off received near Multani Gate, police registered a case under Sections 303(2) and 304 of the BNS. A subsequent raid near abandoned structures by the Ferozepur City Railway Station led to the initial arrest of five suspects: Veeru, Virakh, Mohit, Tanush, and Prince. Continued interrogation led to the arrest of an associate, Karan, and a local buyer, Sanjeev Kapoor, who was allegedly purchasing the stolen devices.
Officials noted that while Mohit and Karan have prior criminal records, the other youths involved are first-time offenders.
The SSP expressed grave concern over the profile of the accused, all of whom are aged between 20 and 26. This trend of young individuals seeking "easy money" through illegal acts highlights a troubling shift toward early-age criminality.
"The involvement of youth in such crimes is a serious concern for society," police officials remarked, emphasizing that enforcement must be paired with community counselling and awareness to prevent young people from falling into the trap of crime.
While Sanjeev Kapoor remains in judicial custody, the remaining suspects are on police remand pending further court proceedings.
