Consul General of India in New York Releases Dr. Raju Narayana Swamy’s Book on Global Geographical Indications

Binaya Srikanta Pradhan, Consul General of India in New York, has released the book Towards Robust Laws and Strong Jurisprudence: The Saga of Geographical Indication Across the Globe, authored by noted Kerala IAS officer and anti-corruption crusader Raju Narayana Swamy.
The book, which is Dr. Swamy’s 36th publication, explores the global evolution of Geographical Indications (GI) and emphasizes the need to move from a state-driven, trader-centric model to a producer-driven, bottom-up approach. It argues that GI protection can play a significant role in fostering social capital and strengthening local economies.
The volume examines the international legal regime governing Geographical Indications, outlines the relevant legal frameworks, and presents case studies from around the world, including issues relating to trans-border GIs.
Dr. Raju Narayana Swamy is widely known as Kerala’s anti-corruption crusader and one of the most distinguished officers in the Indian Administrative Service. His earlier literary works include the Sahitya Akademi Award-winning travelogue Shantimanthram Muzhangunna Thazhvarayil and Neelakkurinji: Oru Vyazhavattathile Vasantham, which earned him the Kerala State Award for Children’s Literature.
An accomplished administrator and scholar, Dr. Swamy recently drew attention for having served a record 38 times as Central Observer for the Election Commission of India, including as an international observer during the 2018 Zimbabwe elections.
In 2021, he was awarded the prestigious George Mason University Leonardo da Vinci Fellowship for his scholarship in intellectual property law. He also received the 2018 Satyendra K. Dubey Memorial Award from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur for his fight against corruption and was a recipient of the distinguished Homi Bhabha Fellowship in cyber law.
A B.Tech graduate in Computer Science and Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Dr. Swamy holds a PhD in Law from Gujarat National Law University. He also earned a postgraduate diploma from National Law School of India University and an LL.M. from National Law University Delhi, winning gold medals in both programs. He secured All India Rank 1 in the 1991 Civil Services Examination.
Dr. Swamy has played a pivotal role in implementing major initiatives in rural development, education, and healthcare, and is widely respected for his innovative use of technology, citizen engagement, transparency, and accountability in governance.
