Big Breaking: Punjab MC Elections schedule announced

Chandigarh, May 11, 2026: The Punjab State Election Commission on Monday officially announced the schedule for the much-awaited municipal elections in Punjab.
Punjab State Election Commissioner Raj Kamal Chaudhuri shared details of the election programme during a press conference in Chandigarh. With the announcement, the Model Code of Conduct has come into immediate effect across the state.
According to the Election Commission, polls will be conducted for 8 Municipal Corporations, 76 Municipal Councils and 21 Nagar Panchayats across Punjab.
A total of 36,72,932 voters are expected to exercise their franchise in the urban local body elections to elect their new representatives.
The Election Commissioner said polling will take place on May 26, 2026, while the counting of votes and declaration of results will be held on May 29.
Following the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct, the state government will not be able to announce any new projects or development schemes until the election process is completed.
The administration has been directed to ensure peaceful, transparent and fair conduct of the elections across all urban local bodies.
Soon after the announcement, political activity intensified in the state, with major parties including the Aam Aadmi Party, Indian National Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal and Bharatiya Janata Party beginning internal meetings to finalise candidates.
The upcoming urban local body elections are being seen as politically crucial for all major parties ahead of future electoral battles in Punjab.
