Amritsar (Punjab), May 11, 2026: Former Punjab Minister and senior leader Lakshmikanta Chawla has written to the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, raising objections to television advertisements promoting eggs and alleging that such campaigns are misleading children and encouraging non-vegetarian food habits.
In her letter, Chawla said several TV channels are airing advertisements claiming that children need to consume eggs to become physically strong, remain healthy and perform better in sports. Referring to a commercial featuring a film actress, she alleged that advertising companies repeatedly promote the consumption of eggs several times a day.
She criticised television channels and advertisers for prioritising profits over social impact. “TV channels show such advertisements to earn money and celebrities endorse them for financial gain, but the government should think about the impact these campaigns have on society,” she said.
Questioning government policy, Chawla asked whether the Centre wanted the entire country to adopt non-vegetarian eating habits. She said it was contradictory to speak about Indian culture and traditional values while simultaneously allowing promotional campaigns encouraging children to consume eggs.
The former minister also challenged claims made in some advertisements and official campaigns that eggs help improve immunity and disease resistance. Referring to the COVID-19 pandemic, she questioned the scientific basis of such claims and urged the government to reconsider the messaging being directed at children.
Chawla appealed to the Union government to immediately stop what she termed “misleading propaganda” so that future generations remain connected to Indian cultural values and traditions.
