Punjab: Health Dept issues Do’s and Don’ts to stay safe during heatwave

Chandigarh, May 23, 2026:Amid rising temperatures and heatwave conditions across Punjab, the Punjab Health Department has issued a public advisory urging residents to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.
Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh appealed to people, especially children, elderly citizens and outdoor workers, to remain alert and follow safety guidelines during extreme heat conditions.
Do’s During Heatwave
- Drink water frequently, even if not feeling thirsty
- Use ORS, lemon water, lassi and other hydrating fluids
- Wear loose, light-coloured cotton clothes
- Cover the head with caps, umbrellas or towels while outdoors
- Schedule outdoor activities during early morning or evening hours
- Eat water-rich fruits such as watermelon, cucumber and oranges
- Keep homes cool with proper ventilation, fans and curtains
- Employers should provide shade and drinking water to labourers working outdoors
Don’ts During Heatwave
- Avoid stepping out between 12 PM and 3 PM unless necessary
- Limit tea, coffee, alcohol and sugary carbonated drinks
- Avoid oily, spicy and stale food
- Do not perform heavy physical activity during peak heat hours
- Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles
The department also advised people to seek immediate medical help in case of symptoms such as high fever, confusion, severe headache, nausea, seizures or rapid heartbeat.
