Bathinda, June 6: Chief Agriculture Officer Dr. Harpreetpal Kaur has appealed to farmers across the district to get their agricultural soils tested and use gypsum for soil reclamation if high levels of sodium bicarbonate or soil salinity are detected.
She explained that excessive sodium content in the soil deteriorates its structure, restricts water infiltration, and adversely affects crop productivity. Gypsum has proven to be an effective soil amendment for such conditions, as it helps reduce excess sodium and improves soil fertility and productivity.
Dr. Kaur further informed that the Punjab Government is providing gypsum to farmers at a 50 percent subsidy. The material is available at the offices of all Block Agriculture Officers across Bathinda district. Eligible farmers can avail themselves of this facility by applying through the prescribed procedure.
The Chief Agriculture Officer advised farmers to use gypsum strictly according to soil test recommendations and under the guidance of agricultural experts to ensure maximum benefits. She emphasized that improving soil health is essential for making agriculture more profitable and sustainable in the long run.
For further information, farmers may contact their nearest Block Agriculture Officer’s office or other officials of the Agriculture Department.
