Hoshiarpur Granthi Suicide Case: 6 Granthis arrested for alleged abetment, harassment

Hoshiarpur (Punjab), June 14, 2026: Punjab Police have arrested six granthis (Sikh priests) in connection with the alleged abetment of a young granthi's suicide in Hoshiarpur district. The arrests were made following allegations that the victim was subjected to threats and prolonged mental harassment.
As per Economic Times report, the accused have been identified as Satinder Singh, Rajwant Singh, Pargat Singh, Gurjant Singh, Tasveer Singh and Mehar Singh.
Police have also registered a case against three to four unidentified individuals under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections related to abetment of suicide.
According to investigators, the deceased, identified as Jaspal Singh, aged 28, was serving as a granthi at a gurdwara in the district.
Police said Jaspal Singh's father, who is also a granthi, had moved from Uttar Pradesh to Paddi Soora Singh village around six months ago at the request of one of the accused, Satinder Singh. After relocating, he began performing religious duties at Gurdwara Kutia Sahib.
Authorities allege that Jaspal Singh faced sustained pressure and harassment before taking the extreme step. Following a complaint by the family, police launched an investigation that led to the arrests.
The accused are currently in police custody, and further investigation is underway to determine the role of other individuals named in the case.
