Chandigarh, June 20, 2026: Punjab Governor and UT Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria on Saturday assured that appropriate steps would be taken to extend medical support facilities to senior journalists, while underlining the vital role of the media in strengthening democracy and promoting transparency in governance.

The assurance came during an interactive session with members of the Senior Journalists Forum, Chandigarh, held at Punjab Lok Bhavan. The meeting brought together veteran journalists for a meaningful exchange of views on journalism, governance, media ethics and the welfare of media professionals.
Among those present was veteran journalist and Babushahi Network Editor-in-Chief Baljit Balli, who participated in the deliberations alongside other senior members of the Forum. The interaction provided a platform for experienced media professionals to engage directly with the Governor on issues concerning the press and public welfare.

Addressing the gathering, Kataria described journalism as one of the strongest pillars of democracy, stating that truthful, objective and fearless reporting has consistently shaped public discourse and brought critical issues to the attention of lawmakers and governments.
He said the “power of the pen”, when guided by truth and impartiality, holds a unique place in society, adding that many legislative discussions and policy considerations have historically been influenced by journalistic investigations and reporting.

Emphasising the need for a free yet responsible press, the Governor said journalists play a crucial public service role by highlighting gaps in governance and administration, enabling corrective action in the larger public interest. He noted that constructive criticism from the media helps improve governmental performance and strengthens accountability.
Kataria further observed that journalists often act as a bridge between the public and the administration by identifying areas requiring reform. Their insights, he said, contribute significantly to transparent, responsive and people-centric governance.
Stressing the importance of self-reflection in institutions and individuals, he remarked that shortcomings should not be concealed but acknowledged and addressed to enable continuous improvement.

Referring to the welfare of media professionals, Kataria acknowledged the challenges faced by many journalists after retirement and appreciated the initiative of the Senior Journalists Forum in providing support, engagement and a sense of community to veteran media persons. He assured the members that suitable efforts would be made to facilitate medical assistance for senior journalists.
Forum President Jagtar Singh Sidhu welcomed the Governor and briefed him on the objectives and activities of the organisation. During the event, Governor Kataria also formally unveiled the logo of the Senior Journalists Forum.
Forum Chairman A.S. Prashar expressed gratitude to Punjab Lok Bhavan for hosting the interaction and enabling a constructive dialogue between the media fraternity and the constitutional head of the State.

The session concluded with an exchange of views on the role of media in a democratic society, ethical journalism, governance challenges, and the welfare of journalists. The Governor reiterated that a vibrant and independent media remains essential for safeguarding democratic values and strengthening public institutions.
