Chandigarh, July 10: One of India's most respected intelligence professionals, former Intelligence Bureau (IB) Director Tapan Deka, retired from the Indian Police Service on June 30, bringing to an end a distinguished career that spanned over three decades at the forefront of the country's security and intelligence apparatus.
A 1988-batch IPS officer, Mr. Deka emerged as one of the most influential figures in India's intelligence establishment, serving in several sensitive assignments and playing a pivotal role in strengthening the nation's internal security, counter-intelligence operations, and counter-terrorism framework. His tenure was marked by meticulous planning, operational excellence, and a steadfast commitment to protecting India's national interests.
Known for his low-profile yet highly effective style of functioning, Mr. Deka earned the confidence of successive governments and the respect of colleagues across the security and law-enforcement community. Throughout his career, he was associated with several high-impact intelligence operations and was widely recognised for his deep institutional knowledge, strategic foresight, and uncompromising professionalism.
Senior officials described his retirement as the end of an important chapter in the history of India's premier domestic intelligence agency. They noted that his leadership significantly enhanced the Intelligence Bureau's operational capabilities and reinforced its role in safeguarding the country's internal security amid increasingly complex and evolving threats.
Paying tribute to Mr. Deka's distinguished service, Union Home Minister Amit Shah conveyed his appreciation for the former IB chief's exceptional contribution to the nation. He wished Mr. Deka good health, happiness, and a fulfilling post-retirement life, acknowledging his unwavering dedication and decades of selfless public service.
With Mr. Deka's superannuation, the leadership of the Intelligence Bureau has passed to senior IPS officer Mahesh Dixit, who has assumed charge as Director on 1st July 2026
