Chandigarh, July 10, 2026: Amid growing factionalism within the Punjab Congress, Punjab Congress President Amrinder Singh Raja Warring has defended his leadership, saying that while some party leaders may have differences with him, he is committed to resolving internal discord and bringing disgruntled leaders back together.
Speaking in an interview with a private television channel, Warring rejected suggestions that he had failed as the state party chief.
“I am not a failed president. I have always performed well in my role. It is possible that some people may not like me because you cannot keep everyone happy,” he said.
Addressing the ongoing unrest within the party, Warring said that if the Congress high command appoints a new Punjab Congress president, he would welcome the decision wholeheartedly. He also asserted that he would make every possible effort to reconcile leaders who are unhappy with the current leadership.
The Congress unit in Punjab is currently witnessing visible factionalism, with one camp led by former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and the other by Raja Warring and his supporters. The divide has become more pronounced since the party high command announced its decisions regarding the posts of state president and Leader of the Opposition.
Although the Congress high command appointed Channi as the Chairman of the Campaign Committee for the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections, many of his supporters believe he should have been made the Punjab Congress president instead.
In an effort to defuse the internal crisis, Congress’ Punjab in-charge Bhupesh Baghel is currently in the state, holding meetings with various party leaders to restore unity.
According to sources, Baghel is scheduled to hold a crucial meeting on Saturday with leaders aligned with the Channi camp. Former Chief Minister and MP Charanjit Singh Channi, MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, MLA Pargat Singh, senior leader Bharat Bhushan Ashu, and several other senior Congress leaders from the Majha region are expected to attend.
