Punjab: Priest arrested for allegedly molesting woman

Dinanagar (Punjab), July 10, 2026: A man identified as a priest has been arrested for allegedly molesting a woman and attempting to force her onto his motorcycle near the Dinanagar railway station, police said on Friday.
The incident has sparked outrage among local residents, who have demanded strict legal action against those accused of exploiting their religious identity to commit crimes.
According to Dinanagar Station House Officer (SHO) Surinder Pal Singh, the woman stated in her complaint that she was heading for an evening walk near the railway station after finishing household chores when the accused, identified as Chandrahas, a resident of Dinanagar, allegedly intercepted her.
Police said the accused first asked the woman for her mobile phone number. When she refused, he allegedly grabbed her hand with malicious intent and tried to force her onto his motorcycle.
The complainant managed to free herself and fled the spot before informing her family about the incident. Based on her complaint, police registered a case and arrested the accused without delay.
The accused was later produced before a court, which remanded him to judicial custody. Police also revealed that the accused had previously been booked in another case related to allegedly hurting religious sentiments through a social media post.
The investigation into the case is underway.
