Ferozepur, July 16, 2026: Congress-backed candidates Ashok Sachdeva and Bohar Singh were elected as President and Vice-President, respectively, of the Municipal Council, Ferozepur, following a high-voltage political contest on Thursday.
Despite the fact that Congress has won the majority in 33 wards by winning in 18 wards while the others captured as BJP 7, AAP 5, BSP 1, and Independent 2 wards, it took more than a month to decide the election process for the posts of President and Vice President after seeking directions from the High Court by winning candidates in majority.
The election, held under the supervision of Abhishek Sharma, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), was conducted in compliance with the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which had ordered the oath-taking ceremony and the election of the civic body's office-bearers on July 16. The entire proceedings were videographed as directed by the court.
The election witnessed tense moments before the process began. Initially, only Congress councillors, who are in a majority, had reached the Municipal Council office. The SDM made repeated announcements seeking the presence of other councillors and even stepped outside the premises, calling as ‘Koi Hor MC Hega’, to ascertain whether road construction and traffic congestion had delayed their arrival. Shortly afterwards, councillors belonging to the BJP, AAP, BSP and Independent groups, accompanied by local MLA Ranbir Singh Bhullar, reached the venue, allowing the election process to commence.
After completion of the formalities, Ashok Sachdeva was elected as President and Bohar Singh as Vice-President of the Municipal Council.
The election had attracted considerable political attention as both the Congress and the ruling Aam Aadmi Party had staked claim to the top civic post. With the declaration of results, the Congress-backed candidates will secure the control of the Municipal Council leadership.
Parminder Singh Pinki, former MLA congratulated the newly elected President, Vice President and others members and assured that they will work with full dedication and devotion for the development of the city and in all the wards irrespective of MC of any party.
