Jind (Haryana), July 17, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday flagged off India’s first hydrogen-powered train from Jind, marking a historic milestone in the country’s railway sector and clean energy transition. The train will operate on the 90-km Jind-Sonipat route, making India one of the few nations to deploy hydrogen-powered rail technology.
Addressing a large public gathering after the inauguration, the Prime Minister described the hydrogen train as a shining example of the ‘Make in India’ initiative and said it reflected the country’s growing technological capabilities.
Highlighting the significance of the project, Modi said the 21st century belongs to hydrogen-powered transportation, just as the 19th century was defined by coal-powered trains and the 20th century by diesel and electric locomotives. He added that only a handful of countries currently possess hydrogen train technology, and India’s 3,200-horsepower (HP) hydrogen train is the most powerful of its kind in the world.
The Prime Minister said the train, designed by Indian engineers, is completely emission-free and represents a major step towards sustainable and environmentally friendly transport. He added that the expansion of hydrogen rail technology would create new employment opportunities for the youth of Haryana.
Beginning his address by congratulating the people of Haryana, Modi also praised the cleanliness campaign undertaken in Jind over the past week. Urging citizens to make cleanliness a daily habit, he said maintaining hygiene should not depend on the Prime Minister’s visit but should become a collective public responsibility.
Referring to the ongoing tensions in West Asia and disruptions in crude oil and LPG supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, Modi said India’s extensive railway electrification had significantly strengthened the country’s energy security. He noted that 99 per cent of the Indian Railways network has now been electrified, while Haryana has achieved 100 per cent electrification, ensuring uninterrupted rail operations despite global fuel supply challenges.
During the event, the Prime Minister also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for several infrastructure projects, including the Haryana stretch of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway, the Jind-Gohana National Highway, and the Kala Amb four-lane highway. He said the enhanced connectivity would benefit farmers, industries, livestock owners and businesses across the region.
Speaking about his recent visits to Australia and New Zealand, Modi said India had signed important agreements to strengthen sports cooperation and reiterated the country’s commitment to hosting the 2036 Olympic Games. He expressed confidence that Haryana’s athletes would continue to bring glory to India on the global stage.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the Centre’s welfare initiatives, stating that under the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi, farmers in Haryana have received ₹8,000 crore, including ₹600 crore for farmers in Jind district alone.
Describing Jind as a land of rich historical and cultural significance, Modi referred to Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the Pandavas, and Ram Rai Teerth, saying the region has played an important role in India’s heritage. He concluded his address by congratulating the nation on the launch of India’s first hydrogen train and reaffirming the government’s commitment to modernising the country’s transport infrastructure.
