Chandigarh, July 17, 2026: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday launched a fresh attack on the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) over the 2015 sacrilege cases, alleging that the then Akali-led government attempted to suppress the investigations, destroy crucial evidence and protect police officers accused in the matter.
Addressing a press conference, AAP senior spokesperson Baltej Pannu alleged that the Shiromani Akali Dal had repeatedly misled the people of Punjab and exploited public sentiments for political gains.
Referring to the sacrilege incidents that took place in 2015 during the SAD-BJP government’s tenure, Pannu claimed that instead of ensuring justice, the then government tried to cover up the cases and deliberately erased key evidence.
He further alleged that the Akali government protected police officials who were responsible for the incidents rather than taking action against them.
Targeting Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal, Pannu said the recent summons issued to him by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) had exposed the alleged failures and role of the previous government in handling the sacrilege cases.
“The Akali Dal has consistently misled the people of Punjab while enjoying power. The time has now come for those responsible to be held accountable,” Pannu said.
The AAP spokesperson also asserted that the Bhagwant Mann-led government is committed to ensuring justice in the sacrilege cases and that no guilty person would be spared.
There was no immediate response from the Shiromani Akali Dal to the allegations made by the AAP leader. The claims remain one-sided and await the Akali Dal’s response.
