Chandigarh, July 27, 2026: The Punjab Government has reached an agreement with sanitation workers' unions, bringing an end to the ongoing strike after successful talks held on Monday. As part of the settlement, the government has announced a significant increase in the monthly salaries of sanitation workers.
Cabinet Minister Harjot Singh Bains said the breakthrough came after a meeting between leaders of the Safai Sewak Union and government representatives led by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema.
According to Bains, the sanitation workers agreed to withdraw their strike and resume sanitation and cleaning services across Punjab at the earliest.
In a major relief for the workforce, the Punjab Government has increased the monthly salary of sanitation workers from ₹10,500 to ₹20,500, nearly doubling their wages.
The decision is expected to benefit thousands of sanitation workers and their families across the state. The government expressed hope that the agreement would ensure the smooth restoration of sanitation services while addressing the workers' long-pending demands.
