Bassi Pathana emerges as key Panthic Contest

Amritsar (Punjab), August 10, 2026: The political contest for Punjab’s reserved Bassi Pathana Assembly constituency is beginning to take shape, with the seat emerging as an early point of interest within the state’s Panthic political landscape.
The latest development came on Monday when Akali Dal Waris Punjab De announced Satwant Singh, son of Shaheed Bhai Kehar Singh, as its first candidate for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
The announcement assumes added political significance as Amrit Kaur Maloa, sister of Faridkot MP Sarabjit Singh Khalsa, had already announced her intention to contest from Bassi Pathana.
Interestingly, Sarabjit Singh Khalsa was himself present at the Amritsar Press Club when Waris Punjab De announced Satwant Singh’s candidature. He appeared alongside the party’s acting president Bapu Tarsem Singh, father of Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh.
The developments have put Bassi Pathana under an early political spotlight and raised questions about how the emerging Panthic political formations will position themselves in the constituency ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
At this stage, however, there is no public confirmation of any disagreement or internal rift involving Sarabjit Singh Khalsa and his sister. It also remains unclear whether Amrit Kaur Maloa will continue with her previously announced candidature and, if so, how her political campaign will relate to Waris Punjab De’s decision to field Satwant Singh.
Announcing Satwant Singh as the party’s candidate, Bapu Tarsem Singh said the decision reflected Waris Punjab De’s commitment to honouring families that had made sacrifices for the Panth and Punjab.
He said the party’s politics was not limited to electoral power but was centred on Panthic principles, Punjab’s rights and the dignity and representation of families associated with sacrifices for the community.
Tarsem Singh also rejected suggestions that families associated with such sacrifices were being sidelined by the party, saying the latest candidature demonstrated the importance being given to them.
The party further pointed to the appointment of Sukhwinder Singh Agwan, a member of the Shaheed family, to its Parliamentary Board as an example of the organisational role being given to members of such families.
The Bassi Pathana development comes at a time when several emerging Panthic political formations are beginning to prepare for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
