Breaking: Two killed in firing over land dispute in Tarn Taran

Tarn Taran (Punjab), August 15, 2026: A long-standing land dispute between two groups turned deadly in Pahuwind village under the Khemkaran Assembly constituency of Tarn Taran district on Saturday, with one person from each side killed in firing.
According to information, the dispute involved around 1.5 acres of land and had been ongoing between the group of former Sarpanch Amarjit Singh, associated with the Shiromani Akali Dal, and the group of Sukhraj Singh, associated with the Aam Aadmi Party.
Both groups reportedly claimed rights over the disputed land. The situation escalated when the two sides came face to face at the site on Saturday, following which firing broke out.
Sukhraj Singh was hit in the head and died on the spot. Nirmal Singh, brother of former sarpanch Amarjit Singh, was also shot and succumbed to his injuries. He reportedly sustained three bullet wounds.
Following the incident, DSP Bhikhiwind Atul Soni reached the spot along with a police team. He said preventive action under Sections 107/151 of the CrPC had previously been taken against both parties in connection with the dispute.
Police took custody of the bodies and sent them for post-mortem examination. Statements of the concerned parties are being recorded, and further legal action is underway.
