Chandigarh, September 14, 2026: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Sunday dedicated a 200-foot-wide road and a park in New Chandigarh to Shaheed Colonel Manpreet Singh (Kirti Chakra), who was killed while fighting terrorists in Anantnag in 2023.
The road from Mundhopur Chowk to the T-point has been named Shaheed Colonel Manpreet Singh Marg, while the park in Sector 5-A has been named Shaheed Colonel Manpreet Singh Park.
Speaking at the naming ceremony, Mann said the sacrifices of martyrs should remain alive in public memory and inspire future generations to serve the nation.
“Our martyrs are our pride and legacy, and the Punjab Government will always stand firmly with their families,” he said.
Colonel Manpreet Singh, who served as the Commanding Officer of 19 Rashtriya Rifles, was killed on September 13, 2023, during an encounter with terrorists in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir. He was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, the country's second-highest peacetime gallantry award, in 2024.
Mann said Colonel Manpreet was born in 1982 in village Bharojian and joined the Indian Army as a commissioned officer in 2005. He said the martyr's courage, dedication and sacrifice would continue to inspire the youth.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the Punjab government's financial assistance for families of personnel who lose their lives in the line of duty. He said the state provides ₹1 crore in financial assistance to the families of Armed Forces personnel, paramilitary personnel, police personnel and Agniveers who attain martyrdom while performing their duty.
Mann said the government was committed to supporting the families of those who make the supreme sacrifice in service of the country.
He also said Agniveers who return after completing their service would be accommodated in sectors including the police, banking and forest departments.
“Communities that always remember their martyrs are the ones that progress,” Mann said, stressing the importance of preserving the legacy of those who sacrificed their lives for the nation.
On the education sector, the Chief Minister said the state government had focused on improving infrastructure in government schools. He claimed that students from government schools were now performing well in competitive examinations, including JEE and NEET.
Lok Sabha MP Malwinder Singh Kang and other dignitaries were also present at the ceremony.
