Chandigarh, September 15, 2026: Tensions escalated during a Punjab Congress protest in Chandigarh on Tuesday when senior party leader Kuljit Singh Nagra fainted while performing the role of stage secretary at the demonstration.
Nagra’s health reportedly deteriorated suddenly during the protest, triggering concern among Congress leaders and workers present at the spot.
The situation further intensified as police used water cannons to disperse protesters. Several Congress leaders and workers were reportedly injured during the clashes, according to party sources.
Congress workers also expressed anger over an alleged delay in the arrival of an ambulance after Nagra fainted, raising concerns among his colleagues at the protest site.
Meanwhile, police detained several Congress leaders and workers during the demonstration. Punjab Congress in-charge Sachin Pilot and several other leaders were also reportedly taken into custody.
The protest witnessed heated exchanges between Congress workers and police as demonstrators attempted to move forward and were stopped by the security personnel.
The Congress had organised the protest in Chandigarh over the Gulzar Singh suicide case and was demanding accountability from the Aam Aadmi Party government, including the resignation of Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema.
