Anganwadi workers resist Ration Card verification duty; Warn of intensified agitation
Ferozepur, September 18, 2026: Anganwadi workers staged a protest in Ferozepur against the assignment of additional duty for ration card verification, raising slogans against the government and administration.
Punjab president of the All Punjab Anganwadi Mulazam Union, Hargovind Kaur, said Anganwadi workers had earlier been assigned duties under the ‘Maawan-Dhiyan’ scheme, which they performed responsibly. However, they were now being deputed for ration card verification, a move opposed by the union.
Hargovind Kaur said ration card verification was not the responsibility of Anganwadi workers and asserted that they would not perform the additional duty. She demanded that the government should not assign work beyond the prescribed duties and responsibilities of Anganwadi workers.
She further alleged that the government had failed to fulfil the demands of Anganwadi workers, leading to growing resentment among them. She recalled that before coming to power, the government had promised to double the honorarium of Anganwadi workers, but the promise was yet to be fulfilled.
Kaur alleged that Anganwadi workers were being continuously burdened with duties outside their assigned work. She said the workers had been consistently opposing such policies of the government.
She warned that if the government and administration failed to address their demands, the protest would be intensified in the coming days.
