Why is CM Mann afraid of Goldy? asks Raja Warring

Chandigarh, September 20, 2026: Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Sunday questioned the detention of former Dhuri MLA and Congress leader Dalvir Singh Goldy ahead of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s visit to Sangrur.
Warring alleged that Goldy was detained because he wanted to question the Chief Minister during his visit. The Tribune reported that Goldy and another Congress leader, Hardeep Singh Dolatpur, were placed under house arrest ahead of Mann’s visit, while police said they had planned to show black flags and disrupt the Chief Minister’s convoy.
“Why is Bhagwant Mann afraid of Goldy?” Warring asked in a statement, alleging that Goldy had announced in advance that he wanted to raise questions with the Chief Minister.
Warring said Goldy was detained before Mann’s arrival in Sangrur, preventing him from raising those questions.
The Punjab Congress chief also criticised the use of police action against political opponents and protesters. He said that while the government could use the police to prevent people from questioning the Chief Minister at present, such restrictions would become more difficult once the model code of conduct comes into force ahead of the next Assembly elections.
Warring also referred to the recent case involving Sangrur-based anti-drug activist Mohanjit Singh, who had protested during Mann’s visit to Sheron village earlier this month.
Warring alleged that Mohanjit was arrested and subjected to custodial torture after displaying a black flag and questioning the government over the drug situation in Punjab. These allegations have been disputed and are the subject of official inquiries. The Punjab Government had ordered a departmental inquiry, while the National Human Rights Commission has also ordered a probe into the allegations.
Drawing a parallel between the two incidents, Warring warned the Chief Minister against what he described as the misuse of the police against people who seek to question the government.
“Beware and read the writing on the wall that your countdown has begun,” Warring said, while criticising the detention of Goldy.
The latest incident comes amid heightened political activity in Punjab ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, with the ruling Aam Aadmi Party and opposition parties increasingly trading allegations over governance and public issues.
