LPU Violence: Was it a spontaneous or planned sabotage at LPU?

Jalandhar, September 28, 2026: Massive protests, violence and clashes with police personnel at Lovely Professional University (LPU) has shocked every in Punjab.
Since its start university has witnessed such protests many times though this is a prestigious university which boasts of maximum foreign students and in whose Convocation even dignitaries from various countries have graced the occasions in recent years.
This time surprising element is that Punjab Police was also caught unaware about eruption of sudden protests and violence that followed besides blocking of National Highway in front of main campus of the university in the midnight.
Though initial word was spread that a rape has took place, a girl has been sexually molested by a construction labour and concerned student had committed suicide after returning home. Students were demanding justice for the girl. Even Police registered a case in this regard based on statements of students.
What has added to crisis is release of a video of three students from Room No. 504 of Girls Hostel No 3 by Registrar Dr. Monika Gulati in which students can be heard saying that no such incident (rape) has happened in their room. These very students later released another video in which they said that they were told by management what to say in the video and their video has been uploaded on social media without their consent. These students also appealed everyone to leave them alone.
A careful examination of viral videos reveals outsiders were part of mob which indulged in violence not students alone. Instead students were seen stopping these elements.
In videos which were shot in dark as it was deep night, elements were seen calling for overturning police vehicles and damaging them. These elements were heard raising slogans, ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ besides others.
On the other hand students can be heard shouting ‘we want justice’ slogans mostly from girl students.
What now ?
Now University has been closed for 10 days and Mid term examinations have been postponed.
In a statement LPU has said "Regular classes will remain suspended for a period of 10 days with effect from 28th Sept. 2026 (Monday). Mid-Term Examinations are postponed until further notice. The revised examination schedule will be communicated separately via UMS.”
It said that "Students may, in consultation with their parents/guardians, travel to their hometowns during this 10-day period, if they wish to do so. Students who stay back are advised to stay inside their hostels/places of residence and avoid unnecessary movement or involvement in any unrest activities in the interest of their own safety," the university further stated.
The administration also appealed to students to remain calm, follow official instructions and stay connected for further updates.
