Raja Warring leads Congress protest in Ferozepur, raises SIR and drug-related concerns
Ferozepur, September 28, 2026: Punjab Congress President Amrinder Singh Raja Warring on Monday led a protest outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office here against the Election Commission and the BJP, raising concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the issue of drugs in Punjab.
Congress workers held a dharna outside the DC office, took out a protest march and raised slogans. Effigies were also burnt during the demonstration.
Addressing the protesters, Warring said Congress was holding district-level protests across the country over issues relating to the electoral process. He referred to concerns being raised by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi regarding electoral rolls and demanded that the SIR exercise in Punjab be stopped.
Warring said the next elections in Punjab should be held on the basis of the existing electoral rolls. The Punjab Congress president has previously made a similar demand, seeking suspension of SIR in the state until the Assembly elections.
On the issue of drugs, Warring questioned the role of both the Punjab and Union governments. He said that, given Punjab’s international border with Pakistan, central agencies and the Union government also had a role to play in checking drug trafficking.
Commenting on the BJP’s anti-drug campaign, Warring said the issue should not be reduced to political campaigns and called for coordinated action by the Centre and the Punjab government to address drug trafficking and its impact in the state.
He said the drug issue should be kept above political considerations and urged both governments to work together for effective measures against the problem.
On the recent unrest at Lovely Professional University (LPU), Warring questioned the Punjab government over the law-and-order situation and sought clarity on the developments. The LPU protests turned violent following reports and allegations concerning a female student. Police have registered a case against an unidentified person and constituted a seven-member Special Investigation Team to investigate the matter, while the university has denied the allegations and described the reports as false and baseless.
Warring also raised questions over the allotment of government accommodation and alleged that several government houses had been allotted to people close to the government. Referring to remarks made by Gayatri, he said such language should be avoided and claimed that she had no authority in the matter.
