Drug-free Punjab will be BJP’s key poll agenda, says Amit Shah

Jalandhar (Punjab), September 30, 2026: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would make the issue of a drug-free Punjab its central electoral agenda in the upcoming Assembly elections.
Addressing the concluding rally of the BJP’s 13-day Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra at Paragpur near Jalandhar, Shah said Punjab had several election issues, including agriculture, industry, law and order and women’s safety, but the BJP would contest the election primarily on the issue of eliminating the drug menace.
Shah also pledged that, if the BJP receives public support, Punjab would be freed from the illicit ‘chitta’ trade by December 31, 2029. He appealed to the state’s mothers and youth to support the campaign.
Targeting the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Shah alleged that its government had allowed the synthetic drug trade to flourish openly in Punjab.
The BJP’s Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra, launched from Pathankot on September 18, travelled through all 117 Assembly constituencies across the state, covering nearly 4,000 km before culminating in Jalandhar.
Shah’s remarks come ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, with the BJP seeking to make the drug issue a major focus of its political campaign.
