Man posing as IPS officer arrested in Chandigarh after allegedly swindling PhD scholar of Rs 30 lakh

Chandigarh, September 30, 2026: Chandigarh Police have arrested a man from Rohtak for allegedly posing as an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and cheating a 28-year-old PhD scholar of around ₹30 lakh, police said.
According to Sector 19 Station House Officer (SHO) Sarita Roy, the woman, originally from Panchkula and residing in Sector 20, Chandigarh, had created a profile on a matrimonial website while looking for a suitable match with her family.
She came across the accused, who allegedly identified himself as Amit from Rohtak and claimed to be an IPS officer of a particular batch. His matrimonial profile reportedly showed him wearing an IPS uniform.
The woman’s family subsequently met the man and agreed to the proposed marriage. The two began meeting regularly, during which the accused allegedly told her that he was working as a Commissioner in the Taxation Department in Delhi and later claimed to hold a senior position with a substantial income, the SHO said.
Police alleged that the accused gradually gained the woman’s trust and obtained around ₹30 lakh from her. She reportedly gave him the money believing they were building a future together.
Her suspicions reportedly grew after the accused opened a bank account in her name but retained control of the account. According to the SHO, he allegedly possessed the ATM card, PIN, cheque book and a mobile phone linked to a SIM registered in the woman’s name.
The woman became suspicious when the account was blocked following what the bank described as suspicious transactions. The accused allegedly told her that she needed to accompany him to get the account unblocked.
She subsequently contacted the bank manager and learned about the transactions carried out through the account. This prompted her to question the accused further and eventually approach the police.
Police registered an FIR following an inquiry and arrested the accused from Rohtak two days ago, SHO Sarita Roy said. Further investigation into the alleged fraud, the accused’s claims of being an IPS officer and the financial transactions is underway.
